Painting Log (b.) 19.10.2017

I found a large frame in the street. I’ve painted and varnished it. It’ll house the first of the FourSquare series of paintings. So named because the frame was divided into, well… four squares to take four square paintings. Walking back from dropping the Boys off at school this morning it struck me that one way to brings the four separate canvases together as a more united single piece would be to take the four square idea one stage further and divide each of the paintings into four squares too…

Masking out the four squares. Painting can be quite brutal, you have to forego any lingering loyalty to the painting beneath and forge ahead in the hope that a developmental idea might pay off and the painting become stronger… better… clearer.
A signal red gloss undercoat. The four square framework will be less heavy than it seems in this image, once the masking tape is removed. At least two more coats of gloss will be needed first though…
