IDEAS: Marooning

Marooning/Crusoe-ing – taking oneself off to a far-away place psychologically. A performative expression of freedom, escape and ‘islandness’. It’s about mindset. Placing oneself at one remove from the physical actuality of the moment. Think of it as purposeful daydreaming. I’ve previously described it as being ‘all at sea one inch from the land’. All kinds of strategies (music-through-headphones/the eye of a digital camera/ lyrics/poetry/a postcard image/a ‘thin’ object etc. etc.) can be used to facilitate a more oblique engagement with the space around us. Marooning lets loose our imaginations. On our island-in-the-crowd we can test our ideas with freedom and creativity.
